My brother Zane, 15yrs, has about 1,000 birds (chickens, ducks, guineas, turkeys,) and he put a list together for y’all to see what he has found to be he’s favorite breeds.
It takes a person who really wants to raise chickens, to raise chickens. When I was younger, I was the chicken girl, but I got tired of the chickens so I went up to dad and said “dad, i don’t really want to raise chickens anymore!” So then Zane took over my job and now here he is about 10yrs later raising birds and selling chicks and eggs with his cousins, Juju and Brad j! Here are Zane’s top 7 favorite breeds.
1. Ameraucana
A beautiful breed coming in a wide range of colors. There also good layer of blue eggs. They are the American version of the Araucana.
Purpose: eggs/ meat
Egg color: Blue
Feather colors: blue, black, splash, lavender, silver, gold, and brown.
Origin: America/Chile
Temperament: calm and docile.
2. Wyandotte
An original American breed, Wyandotte’s make excellent homestead birds and are Good layers of large light brown eggs.
Purpose: eggs/ meat
Egg color: brown
Feather colors: silver laced, blue laced red, gold laced, partridge, and lavender
Origin: New York
Temperament: calm, but some roosters can be aggressive
3. Orpington
A stunning breed coming from England. Orpington’s are known to be very docile and lay 200 eggs a year!
Purpose: eggs/ meat
Egg color: brown
Feather colors: silver laced, gold laced, lavender, blue, black, mottled, and blue buff Columbian
Origin: England
Temperament: very docile
4. Leghorn
Originating in Italy, the white leghorn is the most efficient Layer in the world, with some strains laying over 320 eggs a year.
Purpose: eggs
Egg color: white
Feather colors: white, brown, silver, and Isabelle
Origin: Italy
Temperament: flighty
5. Marans
Known to lay the best tasting egg in the world. Marans are so beautiful and make good meat birds.
Purpose: eggs/meat
Egg color: a dark chocolate color
Feather colors: black copper, blue copper, blue birchen, and lavender
Origin: France
Temperament: calm
6. Silkies
An ancient Chinese breed. Silkies have very soft and fluffy feathers, and there black meat is a delicacy in China.
Purpose: pet
Egg color: white
Feather colors: white, blue, buff, lavender, grey, and paint
Origin: China
Temperament: very docile
7. Bresse
Bresse chickens have the highest quality meat in the world, and also make great egg layers. Bresses are basically the wagyu beef of chickens.
Purpose: meat
Egg color: brown
Feather colors: white, blue, black,and splash
