Einspänner is a traditional Viennese coffee that combines espresso and lots of whipped cream on top. But instead of espresso, we made a spiced pour over coffee. The drink was named after one-horse-drawn carriage. This type of coffee was ideal for the coachmen because the cream would keep the coffee warm and prevent the coffee from spilling. Who knew whipped cream has been around since the 16th century?. So we went with the coachmen’s idea by adding extra whipped cream on top, (‘cause who wouldn’t want extra homemade whipped cream?)

Occasionally, Einspänner coffee would top the coffee with a sprinkle of cocoa, but here in North Idaho there’s a great breakfast place called “Old European” and there Austrian coffee is soooo good! I’m not sure what Austrian coffee they went off of but I know they top it with a bit of nutmeg, amazing. So when I was researching Austrian coffee I did not find any spiced coffees, so I figured we best make our own:). Your gonna love it!!

My sister Tyler will be showing you how to make this delicious cup of coffee!!

After you grind your coffee beans, place in strainer on top of your Krafe, now add in cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg.

The coffee is not sweet, but the homemade whip cream is. If your heart desires I but more sweetness to the coffee then feel free to add in a bit of sugar, or a bit of maple syrup may add I nice flavor.

Now it’s time to pour over, pour the hot water over the coffee and spices and watch the magic happen!! Perfect rainy day for this coffee, ain’t it?

But, why the pour over?
Why the pour over you may ask? Three simple reasons:
- Tastes wayyyy better and smoother then any other coffee method.
- The aroma just makes your heart smile
- You can control the flavor and strength of your coffee
BOOM! The reason to love pour overs.

Can you smell it?

What kinda coffee should I use?
Well, what kinda coffee do you like? Do you prefer light over dark? Or do you settle with medium roast? My preference is light roasted coffee beans from our local coffee roaster, DOMA coffee. You can also use espresso beans if you want a more richer coffee.

Now, pour the pleasantly smooth spiced coffee into your favorite mug!! Ok, now for the whipped cream, because without whipped cream this coffee would be kinda sad…

In a large bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form, about 5-10 minutes depending on your mixer.

Now, dust the whipped cream with some nutmeg! (or if you’re Tyler, dump the nutmeg;)

Now, DEVOUR! delicious, I know, right?
